In 2014, just two years after the Bread Pool surpassed $20,000 for the first time, the purse jumped to $24,650. But after years of feral growth, expansion came to a screeching halt in 2015. Why? I still haven't figured it out. But a decade after falling just $350 short of our holy grail, we have yet to realize our first $25K purse.
The introduction of bulk-purchase discounts a year ago proved to be wildly successful: more Breadheads purchased 3-bracket packages than single brackets. That radical change in buying strategy after decades of single-bracket dominance put a considerable dent in my Jim Beam Fund, but was a necessary sacrifice in creating groundswell for a legitimate run at a 25K purse in 2024.
Even with the sales of 3-bracket packages this year picking up where they left off in 2023, there's another critical step in conquering the $25K mountain: an influx of newbies in 2024.
In past years, about 10% of BreadHeads were responsible for recruiting 85% of rookies. That's just not sustainable. Instead of a small group of passionate participants casting a wide net, I'm hoping to persuade EACH BreadHead to pass along ONE contact that you think might be a good fit in the Meadow of Shame.
For the second year, we're sweetening the deal for bulk-purchasers with a free entry to a unique game: Pick 5. You can't purchase a Pick 5 entry; you earn a free entry for every multiple of three brackets you purchase.
Pick 5 is simplicity itself: Each contestant picks 5 teams from the 64-team main bracket and collects the points those teams accumulate from their SEED NUMBER ONLY (without the base points that teams accumulate beginning in the Sweet 16 round of the Bread Pool).
For example, if one of your teams is a No. 5 seed and wins four games, you'd collect 20 points from that team. If one of your teams is a No. 1 seed and wins the national championship, you'll collect 6 points from that team. Most points wins $1,000.
Nate Cressman (Greensboro, NC) won our first Pick 5 in 2023 with 78 points using a No. 3, No. 4, two No. 5s and a No. 6 seed.
The most points accumulated by a single team was 36 by No. 9 seed Florida Atlantic, which won four games before losing in the Final Four. Only Tasha Darbes (New York, NY) and Greg Bridges (Alameda, CA) had FAU among their five teams.
The Bread Pool may be the adrenaline junkie's March Madness pool, but for the rush of a lifetime, line up a seat with one of the nation's premier tornado chasers during twister season on the Great Plains. Longtime BreadHead Gregg Potter (Palm Desert, CA), the founder of F5! Tornado Safaris, has spent the last 25 years guiding thrill-seekers around the Great Plains for two weeks each May. It's not too late to get a seat with Gregg in 2024.
Sign up for Gregg's newsletter, "Against the Wind." for a monthly look at one of America's most fascinating obsessions.
