The $69 bracket that has been the Bread Pool's calling card for years is now part of its history.
Bottom line: Even with a price chart posted on our Payment Center page, $69 was the source of dozens of annual mathematical errors for BreadHeads submitting multiple entries: Some paid too much, most paid too little, and all of them required notification and a time-sucking follow-up transaction ... only for dozens to get the math wrong again the following year.
So single brackets are now $70: round numbers make for easier math. But based on 2023, the first year in Bread Pool history that we offered a 3-bracket bulk rate, only about 30% of you will be paying that $70 rate. The other 70% will be paying $65 . . . or less.
I inherited my need to over-explain things from my father, a man of few words until you asked him for directions -- then he put Google to shame for exacting detail. And while I long ago came to accept the term "anal-retentive" as an adjective for my IKEA-length directions for all things Bread Pool, about 5% of BP entry fees each year still end up in the abyss. It's not a mystery; it's mere laziness on the part of a small faction of BreadHeads who make payments to archaic or non-existent accounts.
So please don't try to save a few seconds when submitting your payment. Don't pay the ghosts: Only use the official Bread Pool PayPal and Venmo accounts linked on this page.
You can't go wrong.
The bulk discounts on the chart below apply only to one BreadHead and a single transaction. Bulk purchases bracket not be shared, nor may they be delegated to other entrants down the road.
Separate purchases by one BreadHead cannot be combined (example: purchasing 5 seats today and 4 more next week) for a bulk rate.
Per our 28-year tradition, we avoid offending the PayPal or Venmo gods by not being brazen about gambling transactions. So we've developed an entire subculture around our "annual St. Patrick's Day Dinner." If you feel the need to make a notation on either your PayPal or Venmo payment -- and that's not necessary for the 90% of BreadHeads who are paying only for their own entries -- your should refer to "seats," never brackets.
While the world of sports gambling gambling has undergone a radical change in the past five years, there's still no need to tempt fate where PayPal and Venmo policies on gambling transaction are concerned. Here are some words that should NEVER be entered into a payment notation on either platform. Any transactions that tip your hand will be rejected by the Bread Pool.
Depending on which package you purchased, the Jim Beam Fund collects $12-$20 of each bracket entry fee for software fees, as well as for administrative, entertainment and attitude-adjustment purposes. The Jim Beam Fund separates the Bread Pool from all the other March Madness pools you've entered. You'll see.
A sincere thanks for your continued support!
For the vast majority of returning BreadHeads, payments to the Bread Pool/Meadow of Shame are locked in the Friends & Family mode, whether you use PayPal or Venmo. For rookies and others who need a refresher, please DO NOT use the Goods & Services option on either platform, because it deducts fees from this end, not from you. Tthe same applies if you use a credit card, rather than your balance, to pay your entry fee(s) on either platform. If you must use a payment option that deducts funds from the recipient, please add 5% to your payment. This will only apply to >10% of BreadHeads.
All BreadHeads who have participated since 2020 already have an account, so there is no need to re-register. Registration is only for first-year and long-absent participants. Please do not re-register.
All returning BreadHead accounts are DEACTIVATED at the outset of every Bread Pool. The only way to re-activate your account is to pay your entry fee(s). Once you have done so, your account will be activated within a few hours. At that time, please edit your city of residence if it has changed.
Depending on how your set up your alerts on PayPal or Venmo, your text or email receipt will serve as your proof of payment. Please do not email Brian requesting confirmation of your entry fee(s).
You will be eligible for a free Pick 5 entry for every multiple of three brackets that you purchase in a single transaction. Eligible BreadHeads will receive an email containing Pick 5 details. Once your Bread Pool account has been activated, it's merely a waiting game until Selection Sunday (March 17), when Bread Pool brackets AND the Pick 5 game will go live.
